Instructions
-
Cut
six 13" squares from the black poplin and the Floriani
Heat N Sta Fleece. Fuse a batting square to the wrong side
of each poplin square. (Cover the ironing surface with a non-stick
sheet to keep the battingfrom sticking.)
-
Cut
the Floriani Appliqué Wonder into strips 4" wide
and fuse to the wrong side of each colored fabric strip, overlapping
the Appliqué Wonder as necessary to cover the strip
width.
-
Cut each colored fabric piece into nine 3-1/2" wide squares.
-
Use
a ruler and tailor's chalk to divide each black square into
nine sections as shown in Figure 1.
-
Remove
the protective backing from nine squares of the same color
fabric. Arrange the colored squares on the black poplin 1/4"
away from the marked lines. Cover with Floriani's Pressing
Cloth and fuse in place.
-
Set
your sewing machine for a blanket stitch 2.5 mm long and 3.0
mm wide. Blanket stitch the edges of each colored square.
-
Set
the machine for a straight stitch 3.0 mm long. Stitch on the
chalk lines between the colored squares.
-
Repeat
steps 5 through 7 with the other colored and black squares,
fusing nine patches of a single color to each black square.
-
Sew the squares together as shown in Figure 2. Although 1/2"
seam is allowed, for more accuracy match the appliquéd
patches on adjacent squares and sew 1/4" outside the
patch edges.

-
Stitch
the squares with red and white patches together.
-
Sew the square with blue patches to the others to form a box.
Turn right side out.
-
Insert the foam cube into the box. It will be easier to push
the foam into place if it is still inside its plastic bag
packaging; when the foam is in place, just tear away the plastic
and remove it.
-
Fold under the seam allowances on the square with green patches
and whipstitch it to the box sides to close and complete the
cube. A curved quilting needle makes the stitching easier.
